Sustainable Harvesting
Unlike crops like corn, our Popped Lotus Seeds, also commonly known as Makhana locally, are grown in naturally occurring ponds or slow flowing rivers. At harvest, the seeds for our delicious snack are collected. This is when the lotus flower blooms with its beautiful purple petals, but don’t be fooled it’s very prickly! It’s also the national flower of India.
Natural and Growing Biodiversity
Our seeds are grown alongside other plants and fish for greater biodiversity and natural protection. This helps to preserve the natural landscape. What’s more is the ponds use rainfall in the monsoon season to refill, with seeds naturally falling to the pond bed, allowing new plants to grow for the next harvest.
Better together
Ponds growing our seeds also grow other plants like rice and water chestnuts! This helps to increase biodiversity and keep the soil rich. Unfortunately, single crop farming such as wheat and soya has destroyed biodiversity across the globe - read more here. By growing more than one plant species together, it’s better for nature and gives more income to farmers.
